Blocked drains are one of our specialties. From fixing, unclogging, unblocking to locating blocked drains, we do it all under one kennel. Our obedient Plumbdogs are trained and expected to know how to find and fix problems saving our customers the hassle of having to call out multiple tradies for different parts of the job. Having said that, on occasion, some blocked drains take a little longer because of something as trivial as the location of an inspection point. In todays video, top dog Richard shares with us a property that he visited where the inspection point was not easy to locate and you can see some of the methods he used to find it without digging up the whole garden.
DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR DRAIN INSPECTION POINTS ARE?
It’s important to know where your drain inspection points are. You would have seen in some of our videos where our obedient Plumbdogs are always raising drain inspection points after spending time finding them buried deep below the ground. It is common that property owners do not know where these points are, after all, they’re not something that you look for every day.
YOU CAN SAVE TIME WHICH SAVES MONEY KNOWING WHERE YOUR INSPECTION POINTS ARE
Some inspection points are tricky to sniff out even with layouts of the property and the latest in detection equipment. Over years, people improve their homes, landscape, garden, mulch and all these have a tendency to cover up drain inspection points if the residents are not aware. Over time, these inspection points are forgotten or buried deep down in the ground or under objects. There could even be new fences built which may not be in line with the house plan which throws off the location of the inspection point.
If your inspection point is hard to locate, it means the plumber has to spend time looking which time means money. In some cases understandably residents have no idea where these points are but if you one knew where the points where, it is useful to remember where they are.
SEARCHING FOR THE INSPECTION POINT
Rich has to employ a few methods to find the inspection point today.
Drain Plan – First he starts by looking at a drain plan of the property (this is when modern technology does come in handy). This is a good section of video as Rich explains some of the how and why he knows where the plumbing issue is and also the importance of locating the inspection point. Check out the video at [2:45].
Prodder – After measuring out the expected area of the inspection point, Rich uses the prodder to try and find the point. It seems like a simple tool but many inspection points have been found with this simple device.
Camera & CCTV – Using the camera and CCTV isn’t ideal in todays scenario because of the bends in the pipes. If anything happened to the camera equipment, repair and maintenance would be quite a costly exercise. However, the plan and prodding together hasn’t revealed the location of the inspection point. There’s even a good chance it’s on the other side of the fence but we know we’re close.
Navitrack – With the inspection point located with the CCTV, it’s time to turn on location mode! Have you see Darius using the Navitrack gear to locate a septic tank? It’s the same gear used here to locate where the camera ended up which is the inspection point.
INSPECTION POINT FOUND
After some digging, the inspection point has been found and the culprit making it hard to locate, a rose bush! But it’s found now and as Rich suspected, it is well blocked up. Time to clear it out.
If you haven’t seen the vide of Darius looking for a septic tank, check out our VLOG here:
With the problem solved, Rich goes back with the clients permission to fix up the inspection point. If there are any future plumbing issues, the clients know where the inspection point is and it’ll be quick and easy now to get the plumbing gear in now to inspect the drains!
